"To escape the suffocating heat of yesterday, I slipped out of bed at four this morning. Pushing open the front door at half past four, the cool, crisp air of the early dawn glided comfortably deep into my lungs. Taking a deep breath, I began my walk of over six kilometers toward Yokota Air Base.\n\nIn the dead-quiet town with no sounds of car engines, I looked around restlessly, searching for something to capture through my viewfinder. However, now that the peak of spring flowers has passed, the scenery feels somewhat desolate. Even the kingfishers, which usually delight my eyes, seem busy raising their young and have hidden their beautiful blue forms.\n\nGlancing at the waterside, I spotted the spot-billed ducks. The little chicks that were supposed to be trailing along—nine of them the day before yesterday, and seven yesterday—were nowhere to be found this morning. I can only hope they are just hiding somewhere. As I made my way toward the runway, faced with the unforgiving laws of nature, my heart fluttered with a slight unease.\n\nMizuho side, Runway 18 end. I looked out at the base through the fence as a north-northeast wind blew past. Perhaps taking refuge from the typhoon, five transport planes, one charter jumbo jet, and three tankers rested their heavy wings. There were no sharp forms of fighter jets. Yet, these massive lumps of iron, huddling together to ride out the storm, somehow felt clumsy and strangely endearing.\n\nToday, I didn't bring my heavy camera, just a light compact digital one. It might lack resolution and bokeh, but it was more than enough to capture the unassuming atmosphere of this morning.\n\nFinishing my walk right on schedule, I retraced my steps. When I opened the door to my house, my wife Hana and our sixteen-year-old dog Noe were waiting side by side on the first floor. My wife had a look of mild exasperation mixed with relief, while our old dog slowly wagged her tail. \"I hope the typhoon doesn't do much damage,\" I muttered, wiping the sweat from my brow. Today is Hana's grocery shopping day. An ordinary, yet to me irreplaceable, quiet day is about to begin anew.\n\nTitle: 'Runway 18 at Dawn, and the Place to Return'"
