"A heavy, damp air lingered under the sun that had not yet fully risen. 'It's hot,' I muttered to myself, hesitating for a moment at the front door. Still, telling myself that sticking to my usual routine is the best way to manage my health, I set off early for my morning walk, almost as if I were escaping. I bought some cold tea at a convenience store and from there, walked my usual route. The town, seen through my viewfinder, was already deeply enveloped in the atmosphere of summer. I stopped by the home center to drop the treats for Noe-chan, which the old lady had asked me to get, into my basket. On the way back, I peeked into the familiar car dealership, letting the engine sounds of those good old days echo in my mind. Today's walk was 4 kilometers, taking a little over an hour. At a pace of 15 minutes per kilometer, it was considerably slower than my usual 13 minutes. Old age has a cruel way of thrusting reality upon you in the form of numbers. When I returned home, an azuki bean ice pop, brought out by the old lady, was waiting on the dining table. The cold sweetness soaked into my overheated body. However, during the meal, a sudden, leaden sluggishness washed over me. Was it heatstroke? No, I knew the cause. It was that long-sleeved cardigan I had thrown on, worried about getting a sunburn. Inside that poorly ventilated fabric, my body had been silently screaming. From tomorrow on, I will obediently apply the sunscreen the old lady bought for me. And I will walk in short sleeves. No more acting tough. In the afternoon, I retreated to my room, turning the pages of a book and working on my PC. The cicadas began to chirp outside the window. A summer in one's twilight years is best spent taking it easy, without pushing too hard."
