"It wasn't even 4:00 AM, yet my eyes snapped open. The brutal morning sun was already piercing through the window, making me feel as though my eyeballs were being directly roasted. I staggered out of bed and tackled my daily ritual: measuring my blood pressure. The cuff hissed and squeezed with a mournful motor sound, and the digital display flashed its ruthless verdict: 145. North of the 140 wall. Again. It seemed a full-blown strike was currently underway inside my junk-heap of a vascular system.\n\n\"What kind of countdown are you doing at this ungodly hour?\"\nA terribly sleepy voice drifted from behind me. I turned to see the tall drifter who had commandeered my office's ratty sofa, yawning loudly while casually scratching the belly of my Wire Fox Terrier.\n\n\"It's not a countdown. It's my blood pressure,\" I snapped. \"My veins are on the verge of bursting, like the rusted pipes in the dilapidated arcade in front of the station.\"\n\"Huh. Well, it's higher than the temperature outside, right? 140 degrees... you could boil water with that. Very eco-friendly.\"\nThe man mumbled his nonsense as usual, entirely lacking any concept of standard units of measurement.\n\nAny energy I might have had to drill basic medical science into a freeloader who confuses blood pressure with Fahrenheit or Celsius was completely sapped by this abnormal heat. Come to think of it, wasn't the biggest factor driving up my blood pressure the very fact that this guy was illegally occupying my peaceful daily life? No, wait. It's the fault of this sweltering heat and the suffocating feeling of this town, which always feels like walking through mud. It's a mistake to get worked up over an obtuse guy this early in the morning.\n\n\"...Hey. Since you're up, pour me some cold barley tea.\"\nI said, roughly ripping the velcro off the blood pressure cuff.\n\"No way, do it yourself. I'm still half asleep.\"\nThe man curled back up into a ball alongside the Wire Fox Terrier. Outside, the heatwave that threatened to melt the asphalt was already creeping in. Whatever. As long as my blood vessels and this hopeless town don't blow a gasket today, I'll survive. Sipping barley tea straight from the fridge, I embraced a strange sense of resignation and accepted the start of another long day.",
